Bennett wins second stage of Vuelta, Teunissen the overall leader
Irish rider Sam Bennett (31) won the second stage of the Vuelta in a mass finish in Utrecht. Dutchman Mike Teunissen (29) became the new race leader, replacing his compatriot and Jumbo-Visma teammate Robert Gesink (36).
The peloton covered the 175 kilometres between Hertogenbosch and Utrecht today without any interesting moments. The winner was decided by a bunch spurt in which Bennett was the fastest.
The Irish cyclist beat Mads Pedersen of Denmark and Belgian Tim Merlier. He recorded his fourth stage success at the Vuelta, with a total of nine Grand Tour wins.
Teunissen donned the red jersey thanks to his fourth place finish. Four other riders have the same time as the new race leader, including the winner of the last three editions of the Vuelta, Primož Roglič of Slovenia, in fourth.
