Barcelona midfielder Gavi (18) has been awarded the prestigious Golden Boy award, given by the Italian newspaper Tuttosport to the best Under-21 player in Europe. The player, originally from Seville, beat Eduardo Camavinga (19) and Jude Bellingham (19) to the accolade.

He is the fourth Spanish player to win the Tuttosport award after Pedri - last year's winner - Cesc Fabregas and Isco, who won it in 2006 and 2012 respectively.

Spain having secured the double two years in a row after Pedri in 2021, something achieved only by Brazilian pair Anderson Oliveira and Alex Pato in 2008 and 2009. 

Gavi's name is now part of a list that includes such prestigious names as Wayne Rooney (2003), Cristiano Ronaldo (2004), Lionel Messi (2005), Sergio Aguero (2007), Paul Pogba (2013), Kylian Mbappe (2017) and Joao Felix (2019), among many others.

AWARD WINNERS

In addition to the Golden Boy, his teammate Alexia Putellas (28) and France's Karim Benzema have also been awarded as best players, mirroring the results of the Ballon d'Or, Carlo Ancelotti and Jose Mourinho as best coaches, and Florentino Perez as best president.

Paolo Maldini was named best manager and Rafaela Pimenta was given the accolade of best agent. Elsewhere Andriy Shevchenko was commemorated for his sporting career. Closer to home for the organisers, Nicole Arcangeli (18) and Fabio Miretti (19) were named the best Italian U21s whilst Jule Brand (20) as best European U21 player. 

The awards gala will be held on November 7th in Turin.
